Beach sand slime

Making homemade slime is one of my kid’s favorite activities to do in the summer (and pretty much all year long!). It’s such a fun craft to make together and keeps them entertained for hours. It’s also super easy and inexpensive to make.

This time around, we decided to add sand to our slime since we just moved near the beach. The kids had so much fun making it! Although we spend lots of time outside in the summer, it’s so nice to have indoor arts and crafts to enjoy making together.

The sand slime also makes such a cute and unique party favor idea for a birthday party or summer event. Just pour into a zip-top bag, add a couple of toy fish and seal with the FREE ‘fish in a bag’ printable (included below). So fun and simple!

Tips for how to make sand slime

I’ve included a few tips of mine below to make sure you end up with the perfect sand slime. 🙂

  • Use plastic bowls and spoons for easy clean up.
  • Make it outside, or somewhere that’s easy to clean up.
  • Pre-measure everything for the kids. Make sure you’re helping along the way to ensure success.
  • Make sure to get the correct color before adding the laundry detergent. It will be harder to mix after that point.
  • Add the laundry detergent 1 Tablespoon at a time. Then make sure to thoroughly mix it into the slime. If it still sticks to your hand, add another Tablespoon. You may need to knead it with your hands to make it the right consistency. You don’t want too much detergent or it will become too runny.

So fun and lots of epic and oozy creations that can be made!

  • 2 (5-ounce) bottles clear or white glue -about 1 cup
  • 1/4 cup white sand (can also find in smaller amounts at local craft stores, or use beach sand)
  • Blue food coloring
  • 2-3 Tablespoons liquid laundry detergent (clear or blue)
  • Sandwich size ziptop bags
  • Toy fish (optional)
  • ‘Fish in a bag’ printable (optional)

Pour glue into a medium size bowl. Add in the sand and food coloring and mix together.

Prep Time10 mins
Total Time10 mins

Materials

  • 10 ounces white or clear glue (2 bottles)
  • 1/4 cup white sand (found at craft stores)
  • 2-3 Tablespoons liquid laundry detergent
  • Blue food coloring

Instructions

  • Pour glue into a medium-sized bowl. Add in the sand and food coloring and mix together. Make sure to get the correct color before adding the laundry detergent. It will be harder to mix after that point.
  • Add the laundry detergent 1 Tablespoon at a time. Then make sure to thoroughly mix it into the slime. If it still sticks to the bowl, add another Tablespoon of detergent. You may need to knead it with your hands to make it the right consistency. I ended up adding 3 Tablespoons of detergent. Be careful though, because if you add too much detergent it will become too runny.
  • Stir the slime until it no longer sticks to the bowl. Touch it to make sure it isn’t sticking to your hands. If you can make an indent, it’s ready to play.
