How to paint kitchen cabinets white
Today I’m going to show you how I painted my kitchen cabinets white during my kitchen makeover. It doesn’t cost a lot of money and makes a HUGE difference! I LOVE how they turned out!
Here is a good before shot! 😀
So happy our kitchen is FINALLY done! YAY!! We knew moving into our house that we were going to get a nice tax refund, so we decided to put some in savings, and some into our house. The kitchen is where a lot of it went, and I can’t think of a better place I’d want it to go! 🙂 It’s pretty much complete, and the only thing that is missing is a light to hang over my sink. I just can’t find one I like. It is so nice to have my house back to normal, and we are really enjoying our new kitchen. These pic’s aren’t the greatest.. but one day I’ll have a nice camera. 🙂
So I can’t say I did it all with out my hubby. My husband did all the dirty work such a sanding, drilling, and putting up the molding, etc. But I can say I did 100% of the painting! 🙂
So after my husband sanded the cupboards I vacuumed all the dust off, and then wiped them down with an all-purpose spray.
Here is Carson being a great helper! 😉 Most the day he spent playing with our neighbors, so that was really nice!! Big thank you to Brit!
I think this was my least favorite part…
We put thumb tacks on the backs of the cupboards, so we could flip sides and paint A LOT faster. This way they rested on the thumbtacks instead of the ground. It actually worked out pretty well.
First coat of primer. I used kilz 2. I highly suggest buying a spray painter instead of using a brush. It’s about 50 bucks, and it looks a whole lot better! This is the paint sprayer we got, and it worked great.
My husband ripping off the old molding…while I’m outside painting. 🙂
First coat done!
Sanded all the boards… then cleaned them of course.
We made plenty of trips to Home Depot and Lowes… Good thing they are both 1/2 mile from our house. We had our 10% move-in coupon as well, which made it even better!
So after we saw the results with the spray painter, we realized we needed to tape everything up and spray the kitchen down. Who knew taping took SOOOOO long. It really did. But I am so glad we did, because the spray paint looks sooo much cleaner and professional.
All the molding and bead board is up!
Oh yes the hardware! I love the black hardware!
AND…the black granite. We actually ended up spending ALOT less on our kitchen then we thought and decided to go for it. We found a really cheap guy on craiglist, that I was a little nervous about, but I’m sooo happy with the way it looks. They did a really good job!! It pays to get a lot of differnent bids.
That looks awesome! Nice work!
I am SO impressed with your new kitchen! Wow!! You guys should be very proud. I absolutely love the white cabinets with the black granite counters. Great job 🙂
amazing. my kitchen looks like something straight out of the seventys maybe I will paint my cabinets? 🙂 love the white and black so pretty!

Wow wow wow, I love it! The white makes it look so much better and so more modern! Well done!
I found you from "Between Naps on the Porch" You and your husband have done a wonderful job with your kitchen. I love the detail of the bead board, trim work and black pulls, very nice! The counter top is lovely too! Personally, I love the view of your kitchen with nothing above the cabinets! It brings my eye back down to the crisp cabinets!
You did a huge transformation in just four days.
Love it!!!!
Congratulations to both of you.

What an amazing transformation!!
My goodness that looks amazing!!! And the granite is awesome :] I'm glad you found such a great deal!!
Very nice job on the kitchen. It is very rewarding to do the work yourself. My hubby is super handy, too. Thank goodness since he hates to hire anyone to do anything.
What a great job. It' so nice you could do it your selves. I love those white on white polka dot curtains!
absolutely beautiful!

Absolutely STUNNING makeover!
I've been wondering whether or not I could use the paint sprayer on my cab frames. Did you paint the drawers or only the fronts? It looks like you painted the insides of all the cabs… I can only imagine how many hours were spent painting but it looks FABULOUS!!!!

Wow! Aren't those OAK cabinets you painted? My husband won't let me paint ours, because he's convinced the oak grain will still show (texture, not color). But yours look pretty smooth! Please, please let me know if they really are smooth, so I can inform my husband. Thanks!
Your kitchen looks fantastic…..thanks for sharing your photos. We remodeled our kitchen 2 years ago and went with the black countertops too. We already had the white cabinets, so that worked well for us. You are gonna love it…….I love my kitchen so much. It inspires me to cook more!

What a difference. It looks great!
I am featuring a necklace tutorial and giveaway. I'd love it if you stopped by my blog!
Your kitchen looks wonderful! Have you thought of putting hardware on the two "drawers" in front of the sink? My favorite color combo is black and white ~ love how you did this. Ellie
That was one of the best tutorials I've ever come across yet! Loved the pin suggestion for the back of your cabs. Genius! I have one of those paint sprayers too still in the box. Ya think I should actually give it a whirl??? 🙂
Awesome beautiful kitchen!
Thanks for linking it up to SNS

what kind of paint sprayer is that? Is it a pain to clean up??
Think I might need one of those.
Thanks for letting me know.

What an amazing transformation! You did a great job! Increased the value of your house WAY more than you spent on paint and hardware!
Such a transformation! They look amazing! The spray gun really makes things easier, doesn't it?
🙂 Kacey
It looks wonderfully fabulous!!!
Love The Pioneer Woman Cookbook!
Thank you SO MUCH for posting all the details and how-to's, etc. You made up a wonderful tutorial, which will save everyone a lot of worry and wondering if we're doing it right. It really looks beautiful and you should be so proud of yourself!
Wow! Looks fabulous!
Beautiful job! I'm getting ready to paint my cabinets, and I'd like to know if you needed to thin the paint when you used the sprayer? Thanks for the great thumbtack tip!
Wow, it looks great! I'm sure it was a lot of work but you will get so much enjoyment from it! Cooking is a lot more fun in a nice kitchen!!!
Amazing! I'm so glad I found this! I'm redoing mine in a month or so. You make it look easy!
This is also going to be my next project! I love how it turned out!!! Great job!
AWESOME JOB!!! we'll be doing black silestone, i love it next to white/off white cabinetry.
I'm officially tipping my hat to you. That is such a HUGE project! We painted all the cabinets in our last house and it was EXHAUSTING! It looks so amazing with the white and the beadboard!! WELL DONE!!
Thanks for linking!

God's blessings,

Fantastic! I'm a sucker for the white with the black counters!
Wow, now that is what I call a make over. You did a fantastic job on the kitchen and the post. Very helpful information. Great job! Thanks for joining Timeless Tuesday!!
Paula Grace ~
Thanks for an inspiring before & after.. love your kitchen. I recently made a decision to do my kitchen cabinets in white, and then my daughter sent me your blog link!! A couple of questions that I hope you will answer. Did you use a latex or oil based primer/paint? If oil, how did you find the sprayer cleanup? Also, what paint colour and brand did you use? Is it pure white or a soft off-white. I'm hoping for a charcoal granite when its all said and done too! Thanks for posting..
Looks awesome. You should send it into Better Homes and garden. Thanks for participating in Friday Follow. I am catching up to the links. Rita @ One 2 Try.
Wow, what a great transformation! We re-did our kitchen so I can totally relate to the clutter, dust, and mess! But like you I love the end result! I'm sure you walk in there every day and think to yourself "is this beautiful kitchen really mine?!" Great job, enjoy!
Kat 🙂
Your kitchen looks just gorgeous. You did a fantastic job. So pretty. Hugs, Marty
Please please PLEASE come and do my cabinets! 🙂
Really gorgeous! Thanks for the inspiration!
Wonderful job – love all the photos of the process. We are really toying with painting our cabinets, glad to have more inspiration for it!
This was very thorough and a great read….I've been looking at the pain sprayer and unsure if I want to buy it.
Looks GREAT!! We're getting ready to move into our first home and will be doing the same thing to our kitchen; bead board, molding, counter-tops. Fortunately my cabinets are already white. 😉 Love the track lighting too, my other addition! LOVE IT!!
Wow! What a beautiful transformation !! You guys worked your tails off … well worth it. I love your countertops and your white cabinets look so pretty !! A totally new space that I'm sure you're enjoying !! Thanks for sharing, Becca
Hi Jamielyn. I am not sure if you would even remember me but you were friends with my younger sister Alisha Dana. Anyway, I am planning to re-do my cabinet on Saturday and luckily I cam across your blog. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind….
1. I am assuming that the paint you used was pure white? I am debating between white and creme but if i do creme i would have to paint the molding to match.
2. What kind of primer did you use? I have heard that if you use Kiltz (SP?) you dont have to sand at all but your cabinets look great and you sanded. Just trying to decide if sanding is worth all the extra work!
Thanks Jaimelyn. I hope that things are going well for you.
I'm your newest follower from FF, and…uhhh…wow. I don't know if I'm impressed, or sad because I don't think I could ever do that ;o)….I guess I'll just go with 'inpired.' I'm looking forward to following along!
This is fabulous! I love the red, black, and white. I have the same color scheme in my home.
Wow. I love all of that. Your kitchen looks fab. I want one just like it!! Gorgeous! Thanks for sharing at 'Look at me, I'm SO Crafty!' at Fun to Craft.
You have worked very hard that's good. Granite tops will make your house look more beautiful epically your bathroom & kitchen.
OMG!!!! I am so happy to have found your blog!! We already have the black granite counter tops, but with light oak cabinets and dark pulls!! It looks nice but it is on the north side of our home so is a bit dark. In a previous home I had white cupboards and loved them!! I have been pestering my hubby for just what you did—right down to the beadboard!!! You kitchen looks just like my vision–it looks–SUPER!!!! Hopefully these pics will help convince my hubby!!! 🙂
Your kitchen looks awesome. We are about to paint our OLD oak cabinets black and put in granite. I have a question about the bead board on the cabinets (like on the upper cabinet sides). Did you just nail it to the old facing? Did you cut to fit? Did you do anything on the bottom edge or is it just flat from where you cut it?
It looks lovely. Great job!
Nicole
Love it. Where did you get your curtains for the kitchen. I already have a very similar kitchen but have no window treatments because I haven't found one I like UNTIL I spotted yours.
Seriously hard work. You have done such a great job. I love your new kitchen!
I'd love for you to share this at my party this Thursday!

Looks great. You did a really good job!
-FringeGirl
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL job! I painted our kitchen cupboards white many years ago and if I ever do it again, I'll definitely follow your advice and buy a sprayer!
Had to LOL about how long taping takes. Yep, but definitely worth the time. I always spent more time getting ready to paint than actually painting 🙂
It looks great! I HATE my kitchen!

I painted my cabinets white too, but just delaying the granite counters. Please e-mail me to tell me who you went through to get them. Love your kitchen. Very cute! Also, just wondering why you went with granite instead of quartz. I'm leaning toward granite too-love the look.

For months, my wife and I were saving for our kitchen renovation and now our dream is coming to life. Redoing our kitchen is an exciting time for our family. For the kitchen flooring, we went to our local store that specializes with any types of flooring (Sarasota). Our 17 year old daughter is the one who chose the tile (Sarasota) pieces for our kitchen. Thankfully, she has a good eye for interior design. We are currently working on our kitchen cabinets; my wife is helping me paint them red.
By the way, I think that your new kitchen looks incredible! It’s always nice to have the family help you with renovation projects- it makes the work fun and the loads lighter. Great teamwork guys!
Awesome, I love love love. We just bought a house too, and I've tried to convince my hubby a million times to let me do white cupboards, but he hates white. (Yeah, we're exact opposites, I LOVE white, white everything, haha). Anyway, are you guys in AZ? We're dying for new countertops and I'd love to know who you used if you're in AZ (I saw that's where you're from in your about me section, but didn't see if you're still there). Anyway, good job! I want to do the molding around ours now.
this is absolutely beautiful…I swear I'm cursed with awful oak cabinets in every house we move into and it's always my "sacrifice" for the rest of the house being great….I really hope to do this one day and will definitely follow your tips. Your kitchen is STUNNING!! you should be soooo proud. Plus, you always enjoy things more when the blood, sweat & tears that went into it were your own 🙂
absolutely LOVE how it turned out! Amazing what a little paint and some hardwork will do… it looks great!
I love this! I cannot believe the difference it made! And the COST! I won't even tell you how much extra I had to pay the builders for my white cabinets when we built our house. Seriously such a great job! I also have a bar like yours and think that the beadboard makes a huge difference. I think that might be on my winter project list! Great job!!!
congrats! keep up the good work/this is a great presentation.
cabinet makers
It looks amazing, very good job!!! You guys rock!
love the kitchen!!!!!
four days! ??? I'm going on two or three weeks (I've lost count)
Your kitchen looks fabulous. So glad you got to update the counter top. (I won't be so lucky)
Thanks for all the tips. I have NOT started painting the front facings yet, but I don't see myself spraying them. We'll see how it goes.
great job!
gail
Wow, this is very similar to what we did this past summer. We also used beadboard. Great job!
abowlfulloflemons.blogspot.com
where did you get those curtains? soooo cute!
Beautiful!! You & your hot, handy, plumber hubby did an awesome job…totally inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing!
Do you remember who did your countertops? we’re in AZ and were going to be re-doing our kitchen in the next few weeks!
eek.. I think the owners name was Barry. I can’t remember exactly. Sorry, I should have saved his info. I’d do a search on craigslist and have a couple guys give you quotes.
I love what you did! We’re getting new cabinets and this post makes me think that we can do our own trim and save lots of bucks! Thanks for the inspiration!
I love this! It’s pretty much exactly what I would love in a kitchen!! I was looking over that paint sprayer you suggested and it says in the specs. that you shouldn’t use latex paint that hasn’t been thinned. Did you thin yours and if so, does it give you instructions on how to do that?
EEP! so sorry. I just read the “fine print” above the text about paint
Jaimelyn,
Just curious – what part of AZ do you live in? We live in AZ as well and as I was looking through your kitchen pics I realized that it looks like you have the EXACT same kitchen as I do!! I mean, seriously it looks exactly the same! 🙂 ANYWHO, I love your blog and your kitchen looks great!!
What a beautiful kitchen! I like =)
This is a brilliant restoration. Well done! It looks like you had a full team effort to accomplish your project. I enjoyed the photos of your friends and family helping out. Keep up the great work!
I am in the middle of my own kitchen project and was googling white kitchens. I found yours and LOVE the idea for the bead board. I will be using that myself as a result of your beautiful job. Thanks for posting!
Thanks Jenn! The beadboard makes a huge difference! We love it! You’ll have to share yours when you finish. 🙂
Hi- your countertop looks identical in size to mine. Would you be open to sharing the total cost in labor/slab of granite/installation for the granite countertops?
Hi Jamie! We love it! It was about $2000 for the granite+labor.
The link to the paint sprayer is broken. Which one did you use?
Is that just a normal vacuum with an attachment you used to get the dust off the cabinets? What attachment did you use?
Thanks for the response on the chalk paint. I was thinking of using chalk paint on kitchen cabinets. They are very poorly painted right now. How do you think the chalk paint would work for cabinets? After seeing this post on your kitchen I am having second thoughts!
That looks great! We are wanting to do the same thing to ours. What color white did you use?
Thanks Sheena! I used Pure White by Sherwin Williams!
Thank you so much for sharing, this is so helpful as I am about to paint my cabinets white soon too!
Good luck painting your cabinets! It is a fun project and you will love the results! 🙂
I love the track lighting can you advise where you bought it?
I bought it at Lowes! 🙂
what color did you paint your walls. I love what you did to your kitchen. thank you for the wonderful inspiration.
Hi Barbara! We painted our walls over 5 years ago and I don’t have the paint since we moved. I’m sorry!
I have to say as a seasoned renovator, you and your hubby did some exceptional work, beautiful trim and nice neat corners, congrats on a beautiful kitchen, and a job well done.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! It definitely is a lot of work, but we really enjoy doing projects together. 🙂
Are the insides of the cabinet doors painted as well or did you only do the outside? I’m contemplating painting our cherry cabinets which are beautiful but they’re just so dark in our already dark kitchen. Do you think leaving the inside of the doors unpainted would be too odd-looking when the doors are opened?
Hi Claire! Yes, I painted the insides of the cabinet doors, but not the shelves. I liked having my doors the same, but I think it would look fine if you didn’t. 🙂
Your kitchen looks amazing! My husband and I have this identical layout in our home, and we are looking into upgrade options. I absolutely love what you have done. I was wondering how well the cabinets have held up now that the reno is a few years past?!
Hi Melissa! Thank you for your nice comment! The cabinets have held up really well. I no longer live in this house, but my parents do and love the white cabinets! 🙂
How have the paint on the cabinets held up over time?
They have held up great Claire! I wasn’t so sure with my two littles, but I was pleasantly surprised! 🙂
What brand and color paint did you use? Thank you!
I used Pure White by Sherwin Williams!
Love love love it! Now I gotta start it in my kitchen! Wish me luck!
Good luck! I’m sure it will turn out beautifully! 🙂
I was curious what grit sand paper your husband used for the cabinets. I want to start this project soon. Thanks! It looks amazing
Hi Nikki! I believe we used 120 grit. 🙂
What did you use for the toe kick area under the base cabinets?
Looks amazing!
It looks beautiful!! I have a question- how did you attach the beadboard to the island? Thanks!
Hi Dani! I used a power grab and nailed it on. 🙂
I love your kitchen! It looks great! Your before kitchen is our exact kitchen right now. We are going to be doing similar updates as yours, painting cabinets, hardware and lighting. Where did you find your light for the ceiling?
I bought it at Lowes! 🙂
Wow!! looks great! WE are planning on painting and I think you and I might have the same cabinets. i had a few questions about your process:
1. Did you fill the wood grain? if not can you see the grain after 4 coats?
2. Did you fill the previous hinge holes? If so do you have info? We have “plunge hinges” and I’m afraid that they may be the bane of my existence. We are planning to convert to hidden euro hinges.
Hi Jaci! I didn’t fill the wood grain. You can see it a little, but it is not very noticeable. Our cabinets didn’t have any knobs before so there weren’t any previous hinge holes. 🙂
I know you said your parents live in the house now, but as far as the cabinets holding up to wear- they have not had much chipping or needed much touching up? And you didn’t use a sealer on them like polycrylic ? I would like to do this on my crappy MDF with veneer like cabinets. I plan to sand and use kilz or a bonding primer, but was unsure if I should go with a special cabinet paint or just try to use a better latex paint like SW and use polycrylic? I hate working with poly unless its wipe on, so many drips and brush marks. But I do have 4 small children so I need something durable and easy to wipe down. Thanks!!!
Hi Aubrey! Over the years ours have chipped a little on the edges, but nothing that a little sanding and touch up could fix. Using a sealer or primer would definitely help to make them more durable though! 🙂
This is really beautiful. I have a really ugly set of cabinets. I keep wanting to paint them. This gives me inspiration. Thank you for sharing!
It’s beautiful! Can you tell me about your microwave? I have the same sort of set up only there is just a hood fan there now and I noticed that is what you had in your before pictures. I wanted to know what the measurement is from the bottom of your cabinet to the bottom of the microwave. I guess what I’m asking is how deep is your microwave from top to botton?
Hi Jennifer! I’m sorry but I no longer live in this house so I am not able to measure the microwave. 🙂
i LOVE LOVE the white cabinets. I am actually in the process of redoing my kitchen now. I’m working on repainting my dining set now then it’s over to the kitchen cabinets. In doing mine in country white and my husband and I were just discussing getting a spray paintgun today. I’m so excited to get mine going now after seeing this. Thanks for sharing! It’s beautiful!!
Wow and just in the nick of time, I just started sanding my cabinets to restain them and I saw your pin I love it solo much I am now going to paint my cabinets white. Thanks for the idea Lori
I love white cabinets! Hope you enjoy yours! 🙂
Thank you for your helpful instructions. I painted my kitchen cabinets and I used cream instead of pure white. Maybe my next project would be the lighting in the kitchen.
This is amazing. Are your cabinets laminate? Mine our and I’m worried that the paint would peel. Will the method you used work on laminate doors?
hi! What brand/paint color did you use for the cabinets? Also what brand/type of primer??
I used Pure White by Sherwin Williams. I used a paint and primer in one. 🙂
Hey that looks great – did you use a semi-gloss paint? was it oil or latex?
thanks
Hi- Looks great I have a FEW questions though,…. we are in the middle of the same exact project i’m freaking out a little…did you spray the primer on also or just the paint? After you painted was it very smooth or a little rough? Between each coat did you use the cleaner or just a tack cloth we are doing a few doors at a time casue our kitchen is very large but dont want to spend all the money on new cabinets since our are just a few years old but same old builder grade like yours. Looks amazing once you finishes.
Laura
Absolutely beautifully done! Looks professional!!!
did you use the “bead board” for the sides of the cabinet for the hanging cabinets as well (or just the floor)? If so, how did you affix the to the flat cabinet?
Yes! Jamielyn did use bead board on the sides. To attache, she used pro grabber and penny nails. 🙂
Well now I REALLY want to paint my cabinets white 😉 Thanks for inspiring me.
Wow! your kitchen is beautiful. I’ve been wanting to redo my cabinets but am quite hesitant as I have a lot of cabinets and am not a DIY’er.
Looks Wonderful!
Your kitchen is beautiful! Just curious how it’s holding up as far as wear and tear now?
When we moved out after a few years, it still looked fantastic!
Hi, I am a subscriber of yours and am doing this project in the same way you did it. Could you please tell me what size of bead board you used, width of the slates? Thank you so much!
Did you do the inside of the cabinets?
Yes, I painted the insides of the cabinet doors, but not the shelves. I liked having my doors the same, but I think it would look fine if you didn’t. 🙂
congrats for an amazing project. I will follow your methods. love the paint lids.
Thank you! Good luck with your projects!
